Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure, the Ford family was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford began acting during her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
